At 63, David Nassief got fired after 18 years with the same company. No warning. He ran the numbers that night and realized that if he drained every dollar of savings and retirement, he and his wife Mary would be broke by 65. Six years later, at 69, he had a seven-figure portfolio and real financial freedom. In this episode, David walks Ryan through how he did it, starting with a single sheet of paper he calls the One-Page Wealth Compass.

Top Points in This Episode

  • David’s one-page morning routine, starting at 4 a.m. with water, stretching, affirmations, prayer, scripture, and journaling
  • Why he calls himself “the CEO of my health” and uses doctors as advisors
  • The grocery store moment that became his rock bottom, and his “no plan B” turning point
  • How he built a commission-only business at 63 that out-earned his six-figure corporate salary in 10 months
  • The One-Page Wealth Compass: nine trail markers to financial freedom and five North Star principles
  • His two-minute weekly “wealth check” meeting every Friday at 3 p.m.

A Morning Routine on One Page

David is 72 and gets up at 4 a.m. on purpose. Everyone is asleep, the house is quiet, and that first hour is his creative time. He keeps his whole routine on a one-page list: water first, then stretching and exercise while listening to podcasts, affirmations during more stretching, a morning prayer, breathing exercises, scripture and reading, then journaling to plan the day. After that, it’s the gym and a big plant-based breakfast. He rarely needs to look at the list anymore, but it keeps him organized so half the morning doesn’t slip away.

Taking Ownership of His Health

In his 50s, David’s cholesterol came back at 235 and his doctor wanted him on medication right away. David asked for time to do his own research first. He read The China Study, changed his diet and exercise, and says his cholesterol dropped to 175 within 90 days. Today, at 72, he takes no prescription drugs. His rule: he listens to doctors as advisors, but he sees himself as “the CEO of my health.” (This is David’s personal story, not medical advice. Talk with your own doctor before changing anything.)

Fired at 63 and Two Years From Broke

The hardest part of getting fired wasn’t the job search. It was the drive home, wondering how to tell Mary. She told him, “I’m not sure how you’re gonna do it, but I know you’re gonna turn this around.” David says her faith in him was bigger than his faith in himself at that point.

His real low point came a few weeks later in a grocery store, in the middle of a weekday, feeling like he had a “biggest loser” sign on his chest. That night he decided there was no plan B. He went to work as an independent sales agent on straight commission in a niche B2B insurance field. No salary, no benefits, no safety net. He heard more “no” in two years than in his whole life before that. He now believes those rejections built the mental muscle he needed. Ten months in, he was earning more than his old corporate salary.

Walking in Circles Without a Compass

David shares a study where scientists at the Max Planck Institute asked people to walk in a straight line through a dense forest. Once the clouds covered the sun, GPS showed they were walking in circles, while every one of them was sure they were going straight. David says that was him for 40 years: working hard, earning good money, and getting nowhere with his finances. So he read 21 books, followed 13 financial podcasts, and put every good idea on one piece of paper. When the page filled up, the weakest idea came off. That page became his compass for both his investing and his business.

Inside the One-Page Wealth Compass

One side of the page has nine trail markers to financial freedom, and you can start wherever you are today. It begins with career and income, something David says almost every personal finance book skips. The other side has five North Star principles, the guardrails that keep him from chasing shiny objects. The first one is “live on less than you earn.” Not like a monk, just below your means.

Every Friday at 3 p.m., David holds a two-minute wealth check with himself. He pulls out the compass, sees where he stands, and catches small mistakes (like an impulse purchase) before they turn into expensive habits.
