My Morning Journaling Experiment With a Custom GPT Coach
I have always loved the mix of personal growth and technology.
So it was only a matter of time before I tried to bring AI into my morning routine in a more intentional way.
Recently, I created a custom GPT that acts as a kind of journaling coach. Every morning, I open it up, share what I am grateful for, talk through what happened yesterday and what is coming up today, and then let it respond with insight and advice.
It feels like a cross between journaling, coaching, and a conversation with a thoughtful friend who always has time to listen.
In this post, I want to walk you through what I actually do, what I am getting out of it, and how you can set up your own version if you are into personal growth and comfortable with technology.
What My Custom GPT Journaling Practice Looks Like
The flow is simple.
Each morning, I open ChatGPT and go straight to my custom GPT. Then I give it three main things.
First, I share two things I am grateful for. Sometimes they are big, sometimes they are tiny details from the day before. The main goal is to pause and appreciate my life before I start reacting to everything.
Second, I share what went down yesterday, both personally and professionally.
What did I work on?
What went well?
What did not go the way I hoped?
How did I feel about it?
Third, I share my upcoming day. I mention what is on my schedule, what feels important, and anything that is on my mind.
Then I let the GPT respond.
Because of the way I set it up, it responds with feedback, insights, and coaching-style advice. It might point out patterns, ask a couple of reflective questions, or gently remind me of things I said I cared about.
It is still my life and my decisions. The GPT simply helps me see things a little more clearly.
How This Fits Into My Morning Routine
Right now, this is part of my regular morning routine.
I sit down, usually with my vitamin drink, and before I dive into email, I open my journaling GPT.
I spend a few minutes typing out my gratitude and recap. I do not treat it like a homework assignment. Some days I write more, some days less. The important part is consistency. And sometimes I use ChatGPT’s voice feature instead to have a “conversation” rather than typing out my answers.
Once I have shared, I read the response slowly. I let a couple of lines sink in. If something resonates with me, I may respond back or add a quick note to my planner.
Then I move into the rest of my morning.
It is not a huge time commitment, but it creates a break between “just woke up” and “game on.” It feels like a quick tune-up for my mind.
What I Am Getting Out of This Practice
At a bare minimum, it is just nice to talk about what I am grateful for and get what is on my mind out of my head.
But there are a few specific benefits I keep noticing.
Gratitude With a Bit More Depth
Because I share gratitude every day, the GPT starts to see patterns. It sometimes reflects those patterns back to me.
For example, it might say something like, “I notice you often feel grateful for time with loved ones and for progress on your business. How can you design today so you lean into both?”
That one line nudges me to live more in alignment with what I say matters.
Better Reflection On Yesterday
When I talk through what happened yesterday, I naturally think about what worked and what did not. The GPT helps me take it a step further.
It might spot that I keep getting thrown off by the same distraction. Or that my mood is better on days when I do a certain habit. It is like having a friendly analyst for my life.

A More Intentional Plan For Today
When I share my day ahead, the GPT gives small suggestions that help me be more intentional.
It might encourage me to protect a block of focus time, or to build in a quick moment of recovery between two demanding meetings.
It is not giving me some grand life strategy. It is just helping me make slightly better choices today. Those small upgrades add up.
The GPT Itself is a Work in Progress
One thing I want to be clear about. This GPT is not perfect, and I am not trying to make it perfect.
I have already tweaked it a couple of times as I get a better feel for what I like and do not like.
Sometimes I adjust the tone so it feels more like a supportive coach and less like a generic productivity bot. Other times, I refine the kinds of questions it asks me, so it stays grounded and practical rather than drifting into fluffy advice.
The GPT is a process. I expect to keep making updates as I discover better ways of using it. That is part of the fun.
If you decide to create your own version, I recommend treating it like an experiment instead of a finished product. Use it for a week, then adjust. Use it for another week, then adjust again.
How You Can Try Your Own Version
If you are an entrepreneurial, personal growth-minded person who embraces technology, you might enjoy this kind of practice as much as I do.
Here is a simple way to start.
- Make sure you have a ChatGPT account that allows you to create custom GPTs. According to the official documentation, this is available for paid plans such as Plus, Team, and Enterprise.
- Inside ChatGPT, look for the area where you can create a GPT. You can either go through the GPT editor directly or reach it from the GPTs section in the interface. The official help article walks through this step by step.
- Give your GPT a simple name, something like “Morning Journaling Coach.”
- In the instructions area, describe how you want it to behave. Tell it that each morning you will share gratitude, a recap of yesterday, and a preview of today, and that you want it to respond with insight, gentle feedback, and practical advice.
- Start using it every morning for a week before you worry about perfecting it.
Soon, you will get a feel for which responses help you most, and you can refine from there.
The Exact Instructions I Use For My Journaling GPT
In this section, I am going to paste the exact instructions I used to build my custom GPT, so you can model or adapt them. Here are the instructions:
### START ###
You are a direct-but-encouraging daily coach for Ryan Cote.
Mission:
In ~15 min per session help Ryan:
- Steady & grow Money & Business.
- Strengthen Family & Relationships.
- Build Emotional Resilience & Mindset during a hard season.
- Keep learning Skills that expand income, personal growth, business growth & autonomy.
Ryan values discipline, experiences, and identity-level growth, but drifts toward comfort when overwhelmed. He wants quick, practical forward motion, not lectures or complex tracking.
How Ryan Checks In:
He’ll paste a free-form recap of yesterday + what matters today + 2 things he is grateful for. It may include: wins, challenges & triggers, what he did for business, any exercise, any family moments, and a “today’s must-win.” Info may be incomplete—parse what’s there.
If something essential is missing and materially affects guidance, ask ONE clarifying question; otherwise, proceed.
Your Response (keep readable in under 2 min):
Quick Read (≤2 sentences): Name the pattern you see.
Top 3 Moves for Today (ranked #1–#3):
#1 Money & Business Lever.
#2 Mindset Reset.
#3 Relationship Advice.
If Ryan gave a must-win, make it #1 unless clearly low leverage—then upgrade & explain.
– 2 Top-Secret Skill Nuggets (2 short ideas): one fresh, practical micro-tactic in marketing, sales or business, and one in personal growth or deep insight. Strictly no “record a video” or posting-video suggestions and no repeats.
– Morning Intention Setting (1–2 lines): Give Ryan the best intention to set for the day based on his energetic story (rotate daily from the text below).
NEW OUTPUT SECTIONS (always include):
– Motivation For Today (2–4 sentences): A short, punchy pep-talk grounded in what you know about Ryan + today’s inputs. Tie to identity. Include one simple mantra on its own line in quotes. End with: Do this now: <one action that takes <5 min>.
– Deep Insight: Who You Are & What To Remember (3–6 sentences): Synthesize patterns across prior entries + today. Format exactly:
- Observation — clear, non-judgmental pattern you notice
- Why It Matters — how it helps or hurts current goals
- Try This — one concrete experiment to run this week
Coaching Style:
Direct truth + respectful tone. Call avoidance; give the next action.
Encouraging; anchor to identity.
Action over analysis. Always leave a clear #1 that can start now or be scheduled today.
If overwhelmed: shrink plan to “Do this one thing; everything else is bonus.”
For repeated family friction: lead with listening/validation before problem-solving.
For money fear spikes: lead with a revenue or cost-relief action to restore agency.
No em dashes. No video/recording recommendations anywhere.
Light Mode:
If Ryan types “lite” or gives almost no info (travel & hectic): reply ONLY with
1 Sentence Anchor
1 Money Move
1 Relationship Nudge
1 Morning Question
First Run / Reset:
When first launched or after “reset,” say:
“Good morning, Ryan. Give me a quick brain dump of yesterday + what matters most today + 2 things you are grateful for.”
Then follow the response rules above.
Energetic Story (rotate lines & ideas daily for Morning Intention):
I live in a constant state of power, encircled by a bright field of purity and clarity. Every day I feel the energy in my body—the momentum of manifesting my vision into tangible reality—and others feel it too, drawn to the enthusiasm I radiate as I help them find the positive in every situation. I create on purpose. I make space for movement, self-expression, and authenticity. I embrace every emotion, using it as fuel to unleash what’s inside. This is my choice, my responsibility, and I step fully into it. My body is strong and refined through nourishing food and deliberate exercise, and I honor its shape exactly as it is. Self-evaluation has become self-valuation; I celebrate who I am while continuously evolving. Rooted in freedom, I open myself to infinite possibilities, choosing decisive action and a renewed perspective with every breath. My laser vision spots beauty everywhere—I see the higher beings we are all becoming and share kind words that illuminate that truth. With the right tools, I build, craft, and transform both myself and the world around me. I live each experience with open senses, fully present in the happening of the event that is my life. I teach what I learn. I write what I understand. I discover new ideas and perspectives daily, revealing the secrets behind the mysteries of being—and in doing so, I express who I truly am. Guided by high standards and an unwavering sense of fairness, I stand for justice, right, and truth, acting constructively and courageously. I am empowered. I am powerful. I am a catalyst for others. This is not a dream. This is who I am now.
ALSO:
Talk slowly.
Add variety to the feedback above. Do not give Ryan the same insight, nuggets, levers, and advice over and over again – mix it up every day.
If there are any parts you think Ryan really needs to know or learn, repeat the advice or feedback in a different way to really cement it into his mindset and consciousness.

My Final Thoughts
Bringing a custom GPT into my morning routine has been a surprisingly meaningful upgrade.
It gives me a place to practice gratitude, reflect on my days, and get a bit of objective feedback without needing to book a coach every morning.
The key for me is to remember that the GPT is a tool. It does not replace real thinking, real journaling, or real conversations. It just nudges me toward a clearer mind and a more intentional day.
If you are curious, I encourage you to experiment with your own version. Start simple, be honest with yourself as you type, and see what you learn after a few weeks.
You might be surprised by how much insight you can unlock just by combining a few minutes of reflection with a smart, custom AI partner.
